Nisarg Vidnyan Mandal, Nagpur is referred to as NiViM in this report

Mission:

​

To provide a meaningful platform to the people-particularly students, youths, women, farmers and rural community members for poverty elimination by income generation scheme to solve socio-economic problems. This includes women empowerment, watershed management, waste management, afforestation, biodiversity conservation, health education and networking of local community with scientific attitude growing in the line departments for proper management of the local environment and natural resources.

Aims & Objectives:

​

  • To develop consciousness among students, youth & common masses of rural & urban society about the nature education and protection of natural resources, wildlife, endangered animals.

  • Promoting the concept of sanitation, organic & sustainable agriculture with water harvesting methodology & watershed development and management.

  • Formation of a cadre of active workers from students, youths, farmers & women for direct field actions to prevent public health, protect wildlife, conserve water, forest and all-natural resources for sustainable development with primary hygiene & health of the community.

  • Livelihood, credit & poverty eradication programs for the rural area through SHG and women empowerment training on NTFP, agricultural produce and village-based business for self-employment.

  • Research and Study project to inculcate a culture of nature conservation, traditional health education & popularisation of scientific attitude as a role model for sustainable development of the nation through coming generation.

Approach:

​

  • Creating sustainable & healthy communities are the honour of Human & Environment well being, so they need to be motivated to take up environment protection activities in a sustained manner in the project area.
     

  • To build capacity among students, teachers, women, farmers and rural communities in terms of degradation of the environment and its consequences and measures to protect the same for sustainable environment and ecology.

Women Empowerment Program:

​

Target Groups:

​

  • Students, youths, teachers, policymaker and administrators.

  • Farmers, women and social activist and local staff of line department in the rural area.

  • Community members from any cadre taking a keen interest in nature conservation and natural resources management (NRM).

​

Coverage:

111 villages from 04 taluks of Nagpur district.

​

Objective:

Formation and strengthening women SHGs and their linkages to secure their livelihood and through the entrepreneurship skill development process.

​

Financial support:

DRDA under SGSY and NABARD.

Achievement:

​

  • The families got benefitted through internal financial transactions.

  • Enhanced women participation in village Gram Sabhas shall assist in strengthening self-governance in villages.

  • Capacity built up of SHGs that further assisted them in bank Linkages towards the establishment of small entrepreneurship.

  • Bank link-ups and regular repayments of loans by all SHGs.

Community Development Centre :

​

This was an action programme of NiVIM for empowering women. A certificate course of 6 months conducted for urban women under the Community Development Centre (CDS) of the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) through the Govt. Polytechnic, Nagpur at Nisarg Vidnyan Kendra (NVK). A batch of 25 girls and women got admission free of charge to train in a beauty culture certificate course to start their own business. A total of 125 students admitted and passed this certificate course in FY-2016-17.

All financial budgets and accounts were maintained by the Govt. Polytechnic and full social work of participant gathering and logistics for empowering the women was handled by NiViM.

Science & Environment Education through Demonstration:

Objective:

To create an interest in basic science education & nature conservation among the children through experiments and participation in action.

​

Achievement:
 
  • 3 Senior students chose their carrier as Naturalist

  • 2 students passed M.SC.(Env) and working in Wildlife Institute of India (WII) on a wildlife conservation project.

  • A Group of more than 30 youths as a member of Nature School started an NGO by name of ARANYA and working for the welfare of the community.

  • Exposure visit of students in rural area and work for management of natural resources made them happy and enhanced their educational interest in environmental protection.

Students that shown curiosity in these activities had their city schools register their name with Nature School to do extra co-curricular activities of bird watching, nature protection, wildlife conservation, waste management for sanitation and science popularization amongst the community through awareness and action for the celebration of eco-friendly festivals.

Water Conservation under the scheme of Jalyukt Shiwar to Recharge of Aquifers:

​

Coverage:

The area adjacent to villages and near the forest grappling with water scarcity.

​

Objectives:

Digging of nullah and construction of Cement Nala Bandh (CNB) on the river stream started from forest to minimize water scarcity.

​

Achievement:

​

  • Survey of three villages to find water scarcity and its fulfillment by preparation of a plan for water conservation.

  • Natural stream started from forest dug and widening to minimize a speed of flowing surface runoff and stored for use of irrigation.

  • Water stored in 2.5 Km length of natural stream in the rainy season that resulted in the increase in water level of dug well in the farmlands. This rejuvenated the ground water levels in the near by areas.

Livelihood Security through Sustainable Agricultural Practices:

Coverage:

Farmers from 30 villages of Umred and Kuhi block of Nagpur district.

​

Objectives:

Formation of Farmers Club (FC) and strengthening of the capacity of farmers to encourage them for sustainable agricultural practices.

​

Achievement:

30 FCs formed and various activities organized through the partial support of NABARD to strengthen their capacities through training of agriculture allied action components like training on dairy, bio-fertilizer and protection of farm by live fencing.

​

Expert visit workshops organized to understand the importance of Soil-Moisture Conservation (SMC) which is used to get maximum yield of grain. We gave support to line departments officer like Agriculture, forest, tribal to the implementation of Governments scheme for very fruitful results at the grass root levels. Our FC farmer members participated in the scheme of Farm to Customer sale of vegetables launched by agriculture dept of the Govt. of Maharashtra.

Personal Hygiene & Public Health:

Coverage:

Students from selected 20 schools of Nagpur district.

​

Objectives:

Eradication of ill habits of Tobacco chewing by school students to make tobacco-free schools and smoking-free public places by the implementation of Cigarette and Other Tobacco Product Act-2003 (COTPA-2003).

​

Achievement:

  • NiViM team worked through advocacy & lobbying with district administration to form a District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) under the chairmanship of the District Collector.

  • Sensitization workshops organized for 200 members of print and E-media representing renowned newspapers and channels existed in Nagpur district.

  • Training for 120 doctors, Medical Officers, Food & Supply Officers working in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) for implementing COTPA-2003.

  • Organized Oral health Check-up camps at the forest and tribal belt villages in general and for Paradhi community in particular. Around 400 patients checked and treated in three different camps at Parsodi, Dahegaon and Swalambinagar, Bhende layout Nagpur.

  • Rally of more than 1200 college students conducted on the eve of Kranti Din dated 09th August 2016 in collaboration with Gayatree Pariwar, Govt. Dental College and NSS wing of Nagpur Universty.

  • Anti Tobacco Awareness and Action Campaign (ATAAC) Club formed in selected 15 schools of Nagpur district. Presently, 300 students have become members of ATAAC clubs.

  • An essay competition was organized on the topic Tambakhoo Sewan, Saway ki Vyasan. Prize distribution function held on the eve of No Tobacco Day on 31st May 2016.

  • Proposed a regular centre on a voluntary basis for students to Tobacco Cessations under the name of SWECHCHHA SANKALP Vyasanmukti Kendra at Nisarg Vidnyan Kendra, Besa, Nagpur. It will start very soon. This is a voluntary activity of NiViM members to sensitize students, youths and any member of society involved in the sale and use of tobacco product against Section 6 (A & B) of COTPA-2003.

Animal Welfare & Threatened Species Conservation (AWTSC) Network for stray animals:

​

Coverage:

Threatened and needy stray animals, birds and cattle and farmers of the district

​

Objectives:

Awareness and action to take care of stray animals, birds, cattle belongs to farmers and Conservation of wildlife to avoid man-animal conflict.

​

Achievement:

  • Organized animal health check-up camps in the rural areas to create awareness and save live stocks of stakeholders of rural area.

  • 12 injured birds operated and release in natural habitat during the traditional festivals like Makar Sankranti in the month of January-2017.

  • Rescue, Study and Research (RSR) team of NiViM attending the calls of citizens to handle and release snakes in forest vicinity. Over 30 snakes rescued and released in the forest by this team.

  • Water supplied in the waterhole and natural tanks in corridor covering an area of 112-15 km periphery to quench the thirst of wild animals including Blackbucks, Wolf, Blue bull, Leopard, Spotted deer and a large number of bird species with honey bees.

  • Tanker for water supply sponsored by Berar Finance under CSR activity and financial support given by Wild Trust of India (WTI), New Delhi

  • Small shelter house constructed at NETRAVAN for cows, buffaloes, donkeys, horses under the name of Stray Animals Rehabilitation Centre (SARC).

  • Animal Welfare Fortnight (AWF)-2017 celebrated by organizing awareness meetings about Brucellosis and its symptoms amongst cattle handling the community. Blood check-up camps organized with the support of the Public Health Department of Govt, Veterinary College, Nagpur.

  • A veterinary doctor and para veteran team working as RSR volunteers organized meetings and workshops to brainstorming farmers towards the welfare of animals.

  • Animal health check-up camp organized and drinking water arrangement made to quench their thirst in summer. Fundraised under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from donors and WTI.

  • We organized exhibitions in the villages to sensitize the farmers for the welfare of animals available to them. We also conducted animal health check camps in villages situated on the fringe of the forest.

Inculcation of Eco-Friendly attitude in celebration of traditional festivals:

​

Coverage:

Five lakh Citizens of Nagpur city celebrating the traditional festival of Gouree-Ganesh.

​

Objectives:

Awareness and action to take care of lakes from water, air and soil pollution due to the immersion of idols, flowers petals and other worship materials.

​

Achievement:

  • The habit of nirmalya sankalan and handing it over to the activists of NiViM adopted by 80% devotees of Shree Ganesh and Gouree during traditional festivals.

  • Day by day a list of like-minded and supporting NGOs increased.

  • Nagpur Municipal Corporation also supported whole heartily the promotion of our activities of Nirmalya Sankalan, Idol adoption.

  • A society of potter community formed under the name of Hastshilpi Bahu-Uddeshiya Sahkari Sanstha to increase the production of Eco-friendly idols painted by herbal colours.

  • Workshops to make eco-friendly idols organized in 120 schools. More than 500 students participated in the workshops and helped spread awareness in the community.

  • About 55 tons of nirmalaya (decomposing material) collected by volunteers and sent to the vermin compost plant of NMC at Bhandewadi to make its compost.

  • NMC had decided to put the bill banning the plaster-of-paris (POP) in General Body Meeting (GBM) of NMC to publish notification as a law of NMC.

  • NMC started the movement for the promotion of artificial tanks in each ward of NMC. It will add up to the benefit of protecting our lakes from the air, water and soil pollution.

Forest Protection by Community Participation:

​

Coverage:

3000 Forest dwellers communities of Nagpur and Bhandara districts.

​

Objectives:

Awareness and action to take care of forest, wildlife and management of natural resources to get them sustainable livelihood security.

​

Achievement:

  • Awareness of the conservation of corridor by the participation of the community is in progress.

  • Application for notification of Muniya Conservation Reserve (MCR) submitted in the state office of the Forest Department.

  • Micro plan prepared for 25 villages under the scheme of GRAMVAN of forest department in Umred, Bhivapur and Butibori range of Nagpur forest division.

  • Evaluation of work done by the Forest Department under Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMC) in the village of Nimaji in Kalmeshvar range of Nagpur forest division.

  • Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC) formed in 27 Gram panchayats including 82 villages located on the fringe of Muniya Reserve Forest (MFR).

  • Microplan of 8 villages prepared by the NiViM team for the sustainable development of villages in the next 10 years based on forest protection and natural resources conservation.

  • Training to prepare the Public Biodiversity Register (PBR) by the participation of community members and the experts in the society organized at NETRAVAN. Currently, the process of PBR preparation is in progress in 7 Gram panchayats of Umred taluka in Nagpur district.

To complete the task of community participation and empowerment of youths, women, farmers, stakeholders, forest dwellers in their own field of education, awareness and livelihood security.
